Wolfgang Felber, a highly experienced Fraunhofer IIS researcher, joined the management of Fraunhofer IIS/EAS in Dresden at the beginning of this year. Since 2009, he has worked in various scientific disciplines and functions at the institute, most recently as head of the department for satellite-based positioning systems in Nuremberg. One highlight of his career to date is winning the Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for outstanding scientific achievements in 2020, as part of the team that developed an application-oriented solution for tamper-proof satellite navigation. In his new role at Fraunhofer IIS/EAS in Dresden, Felber is looking forward to the tasks ahead: “Our division of the institute offers a diverse range of promising research topics – from the design of electronic systems in the latest semiconductor technologies to the digitalization of production processes. My goals are to draw on my experience to help align these topics precisely with the requirements of the economy, and also to leverage new potential through synergies and cooperation.”

He will pursue these goals together with Peter Schneider, long-standing head of the institute, who last year was also appointed professor at the Institute of Electromechanical and Electronic Design at the Technische Universität Dresden. In his function at Fraunhofer, he was involved in establishing and designing the content for the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD), the world’s leading research network for micro- and nanoelectronics applications and systems. “I’m very much looking forward to the momentum and fresh ideas that Wolfgang Felber will bring to our organization. Together, we want to make the most of the creative opportunities offered by application-oriented research, and we want to further expand networking with TU Dresden beyond my teaching activities. As a management team, we’ll work together to drive forward the sustainable development of our research portfolio.” Institute Director Prof. Albert Heuberger adds: “Dr. Felber’s complementary expertise will be extremely valuable as we work toward our common goal of making our institute’s Dresden branch an indispensable part of Saxony’s research landscape now and in the future. We are thus strengthening the professional exchange across our divisions.”
