“The cleanest and cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use,” says Dr. Andreas Wilde, an expert in energy management at the Dresden division of Fraunhofer IIS. Together with his colleagues, the chief scientist is working on the Smart Heating System Optimization (SHANGO) project, which aims to optimize heating systems so that they work as efficiently as possible and save energy.
With SHANGO, households can potentially save up to 30 percent of the energy used for heating. This would otherwise simply be wasted, largely due to minor system damage or because the heating system is not configured properly and therefore operates inefficiently. In this way, SHANGO contributes in particular to the UN Sustainable Development Goals of “Affordable and clean energy” and “Sustainable cities and communities.”
The heat pump is one of the key technologies in Wilde’s research, as it is often configured or operated incorrectly.
In a video and in the podcast, Wilde explains how Fraunhofer IIS/EAS is contributing to greater sustainability through the SHANGO project and what people can do to improve efficiency in heating.
