In September, industry representatives met at Fraunhofer IIS/EAS for the fourth time to learn about initial results and next steps within the framework of the Chiplet Center of Excellence, a research initiative of three Fraunhofer microelectronics institutes. A first milestone was also presented.

In September, the fourth industry workshop was held as part of the Chiplet Center of Excellence (CCoE). Representatives of around 20 companies – producing everything from cars to semiconductors – accepted the invitation to come to Dresden and gain insights into the initial results of Fraunhofer IIS/EAS’s collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM and Fraunhofer ENAS under the auspices of the CCoE.

This initiative has achieved its first milestone: The first panel for the necessary characterization of our further chiplet projects was completed at Fraunhofer IZM in Berlin, and the first measurement results from the panel demonstrator were presented at the workshop. Moreover, researchers from Fraunhofer IIS/EAS presented their approaches to system technology co-optimization and showcased current work on two core technologies known as embedded bridge and advanced organic substrates. Since the workshop, further measurement work has generated additional results for the system technology co-optimization (STCO) approach. The participating companies have given the green light to continue work on topics such as architecture and design, system reliability, and demonstrators.

CCoE is dedicated to the future development of chiplet technology in Europe and will act as a key bridge between chiplet research and practical applications in various sectors, starting with the automotive industry.

Its focus is on research into the practicability of chiplet-based system solutions, the development of architectural concepts or reusable components, and on contributing to an industry-wide chiplet ecosystem.

The next industry workshop is due to be held in January and will focus on specific use cases of CCoE partners. Industry stakeholders still have the chance to become a member of the Chiplet Center of Excellence and contribute use cases of their own.

The aim is to establish a permanent consortium with key partners from within this industry network whose highly specific requirements and use cases will help shape the road map for research at CCoE over the next two years.
